Step 1: Raw material extraction and paper production

Every corrugated box starts with virgin or recycled kraft paper. To calculate this stage, measure the box weight in kilograms. Multiply that weight by the emission factor of paper production (typically 0.9 to 1.2 kg CO₂e per kg of paper). For example, a 0.5 kg corrugated box using virgin fiber adds roughly 0.55 kg CO₂e. Note that recycled cardboard boxes have 30–40% lower raw material emissions.

Step 2: Manufacturing the fluted structure

Converting paper into corrugated shipping boxes requires heat, steam, and electricity. The corrugation process emits about 0.15 kg CO₂e per kg of finished product.
